Type this passage

The fastest way to learn a new layout is to stop thinking about it. Let your fingers find each key while your attention stays on the sentence you are building, not the letters themselves. Speed follows accuracy, almost never the other way around. A steady, even rhythm will carry you further over a full page than any burst of rushed typing ever could, and it tires your hands out far less by the end of the day.

The timer starts on your first keystroke.

How the score is calculated

Words per minute is the number of correctly typed characters divided by five (a rough stand-in for a “word”), divided by the minutes elapsed since your first keystroke. Accuracy is the share of typed characters that matched the passage at that position. Both update continuously while you type and lock in the moment the timer or the passage runs out.

Why measure typing speed at all

A single run isn’t a precise measurement — fatigue, the unfamiliarity of this exact sentence, and your keyboard all affect the number. It’s still a useful baseline: run it a few times over a few days and you’ll get a much better sense of your typical range than from any one attempt.

Frequently asked questions

Is this testing my real typing speed?

Yes. The WPM and accuracy shown are computed from exactly what you type into the box, in real time — nothing is simulated or pre-set.

Does this compare my result to Halo's dictation speed?

No. This page reports only your own measured typing results. We don't publish speed comparisons or benchmark figures for Halo here.

Can I take the test again?

Yes — press Reset at any time to clear your input and timer and start over with the same passage.

What happens if I finish the passage before 60 seconds?

The test ends immediately and shows your final WPM and accuracy for the time it actually took you.

Does this work on a phone keyboard?

Yes, the input box works with the on-screen keyboard on phones and tablets, though typing speed tests are generally most meaningful on a physical keyboard.

Prefer speaking to typing?

Halo turns your voice into text in any app, at whatever pace you talk.
