Voice input for Grok

A lot of working with an AI coding assistant is just conversation — describing a bug, asking for a second approach, narrowing down what changed. Halo lets you have that conversation out loud.

Chat-driven coding sessions tend to be exploratory: you ask a question, read the answer, ask a follow-up, and repeat. Each message is usually short, but there are a lot of them, and typing every one interrupts the thread of what you were actually thinking about. Halo removes that friction — hold a hotkey, say the message, and it appears in the input box like you typed it.

What a dictated exchange looks like

Why is this component re-rendering every time the parent updates, even though the props haven’t changed?
It’s likely missing memoization on the callback prop — each render creates a new function reference.

Both outgoing messages above were spoken, not typed.

Setting it up

Install Halo and grant it microphone access — it can write into any focused field. Choose a push-to-talk hotkey, then click into the message box wherever you’re chatting. Hold the hotkey, ask your question out loud, release, and the transcript appears ready to send. Nothing about the setup is specific to any one assistant — the same hotkey works for every text field on your machine.

When to type instead

Voice is fastest for open-ended questions and follow-ups. For messages that need exact syntax — a variable name, a regex, a file path with unusual casing — typing or a quick manual edit after dictation is often more reliable than saying it letter by letter.

Frequently asked questions

Is Halo built or endorsed by any AI assistant provider?

No. Halo is an independent dictation app. It works alongside any assistant you use because it types into whatever text field is focused, not because of a specific partnership.

Does it work in a browser tab as well as a desktop app?

Yes — Halo works with any focused text field, browser-based or native.

Can I dictate multi-paragraph messages?

Yes, hold the hotkey for as long as you're speaking; there's no fixed limit on message length.

What happens if I pause mid-sentence?

A short pause is fine — Halo keeps listening until you release the hotkey.

Say your next message instead of typing it

One hotkey, works in any chat box or code editor on your machine.
