Voice input for Codex CLI

A terminal coding agent is only as good as the instruction you give it. Halo lets you give that instruction out loud, then hands the text straight to your terminal.

A three-stage loop

Most sessions with a terminal agent follow the same rhythm: decide what needs to happen, describe it, then check the result. Voice only changes the middle step — but that’s usually the slowest one to type.

01

Plan

Say what you want changed before you look at a single line of code.

02

Dictate

Hold your hotkey and describe the task the way you'd explain it to a teammate.

03

Review

Read the transcript, then the diff. Both are just text you can edit.

Typed vs. spoken

Typing it out

You shorten the instruction to save keystrokes. “fix the auth bug” — and hope the agent infers the rest correctly.

Saying it out loud

Full sentences cost nothing extra. “The login form accepts expired tokens — check the refresh logic in auth/session.ts and add a test for the expiry case.”

In the terminal

~/projects/api — codex
$codex
›The login form accepts expired tokens, check the refresh logic in auth/session.ts and add a test for the expiry case

Setting it up

Download Halo and grant it microphone access. Pick a push-to-talk hotkey that’s free in your shell, open your terminal, start your session, and hold the hotkey whenever you’d otherwise start typing a prompt. There’s no separate config for the terminal itself; if you can click into it, Halo can write into it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official Codex integration?

No. Halo doesn't integrate with any specific coding agent — it's a general dictation tool that types into the currently focused window, terminal or otherwise.

Does it interrupt agent output while it's streaming?

Halo only inserts text where your cursor is; it doesn't read or interact with anything already on screen.

Can I switch between typing and speaking mid-session?

Yes, freely — dictation just fills in text, so you can type the rest of a sentence or correct a word by hand at any point.

Does long dictation slow down my terminal?

No, transcribed text is inserted the same way typed keystrokes would be.

Give your next prompt out loud

Works with the terminal you already have open — no extra setup per tool.
