Dictate to Claude Code
Long, specific instructions are easier to say than to type. Halo turns your voice into text anywhere on your Windows machine, including the terminal window running your coding agent.
Why voice fits agent prompts
Terminal-based coding agents work best when you describe intent in plain language — the file you’re touching, the behavior you want, the edge case you just thought of. That’s a lot of typing for a single prompt. Speaking it is usually faster and keeps you looking at the code, not the keyboard.
What it looks like
Setup walkthrough
- 1
Install Halo and grant permissions
Halo needs microphone access so it can hear you, and it types into whatever window is focused — including your terminal.
- 2
Set your push-to-talk key
Pick a hotkey that doesn't collide with your terminal or shell bindings. It works the same everywhere, so you only set it once.
- 3
Open your terminal and start your session
Launch Claude Code the way you normally would. Halo doesn't touch the tool itself — it just needs a text cursor to write into.
- 4
Hold, speak, release
Hold your hotkey, say the instruction in full sentences, and let go. The transcript lands right where your cursor was, ready to send.
Getting good results from dictated prompts
- Name the file or component explicitly — agents follow references better than pronouns.
- Speak in full sentences with the constraint at the end: "…and don't touch the existing tests."
- Pause briefly between separate instructions so they land as distinct sentences.
- Review the transcript before you hit enter, the same way you'd proofread a typed prompt.
Frequently asked questions
Does Halo integrate directly with Claude Code?
No. Halo is a system-wide dictation tool — it types into whatever text field has focus. That happens to include a terminal running Claude Code, but there's no special plugin or partnership involved.
Does it work over SSH or inside tmux?
Yes. Halo operates at the OS level, so it works the same whether your terminal is local, remote, or split across panes.
Can I dictate actual code, not just instructions?
You can, but most people get better results describing intent in plain English and letting the agent write the syntax.
What if I make a mistake while speaking?
Release the hotkey, correct the text like you would after typing a typo, and continue. Halo doesn't auto-submit anything on your behalf.
Try dictating your next prompt
Halo runs in the background and works with any app that accepts text, terminal included.
